Buying in Canada / Where to listen

Hi-fi stores in Calgary, and where to listen around Montreal

Most of the gear we cover is bought online, which leaves one gap no specification sheet fills: what a headphone feels like after two hours. These are the Calgary and Greater Montreal dealers that publish a physical address, with the source we checked for each one.

Why a store visit still matters

Three things cannot be read off a specification table: clamp force on your head, whether a closed-back model gives you enough isolation in your own room, and whether an amplifier has enough travel on the volume dial before the channel imbalance you get at the very bottom of the range. A shop that lets you plug in your own phone, your own cable and your own music answers all three in twenty minutes. Everything else — price, duty, warranty route — is usually easier to compare at home, which is what our buying-routes guide covers.

1. Calgary

Practical note: the two entries at 1347 12th Ave SW are the same address — a hi-fi shop and a manufacturer showroom sharing one building. If you are going specifically to hear a Focal or Naim system, say so when you call, because the two businesses keep separate appointments.

2. Greater Montreal and the North Shore

Around Montreal the picture is different: most listed dealers are two-channel and home-theatre specialists rather than headphone shops, so expect to hear speakers and to ask about headphones rather than the other way round.

3. Before you go, and what to bring

  1. Your own headphones and a known track. A demo with unfamiliar gear and unfamiliar music tells you almost nothing. Bring the model you already own so you can measure the difference against something you know.
  2. Your own source and cable. Phone with a 3.5mm adapter, or a USB dongle, plus the 6.35mm adapter most shops keep on the counter. If you use a 4.4mm balanced cable, bring it — not every demo station has one.
  3. Your questions, written down. Return window and conditions for opened items; whether the displayed price includes tax; whether the demo unit is the same revision as the one you would buy; and, for anything electronic, the warranty route in Canada rather than through the seller's overseas office.
  4. Confirm before travelling. Dealer directories go stale. One call about the exact model you want to hear is cheaper than a wasted afternoon, and none of these listings confirms that a specific product is on the shelf.

If the model you want to hear is a budget Chi-Fi IEM or a small dongle DAC, be aware that Canadian hi-fi shops rarely stock it — those brands mostly move through online channels, which is the trade-off we set out in Amazon.ca versus Linsoul. And if you are choosing an amplifier before you travel, the four types and their Canadian prices are laid out in headphone amplifiers in Canada.

4. What we could not verify

  • Opening hours, current brand line-up and stock for every store above. Directories and dealer lists are maintained separately from the shops themselves.
  • Whether any listed store offers in-store demonstration of the specific budget models in our budget IEM shortlist. We asked no store anything for this page; we read published listings only.
  • Postal codes: the two directory entries for 1347 12th Ave SW disagree on the postal code, so we have left postal codes out rather than repeat the wrong one.
  • Whether any of these businesses runs an affiliate or referral programme. We have no arrangement with any of them, and nothing on this page is a paid placement.

Listings are dated snapshots, not a live store directory. Where a directory is the only source, this page says so rather than presenting it as the store's own claim.
