What does it actually cost?
Earphones and headphones: the Canadian tariff item covering other headphones and earphones carries an MFN rate of “Free” in the 2026 tariff schedule, so the border cost is GST or HST plus a CAD 9.95 Canada Post handling fee — roughly 15–18% of the item value on a single low-cost order.
Under CAD 20? Mail worth CAD 20 or less pays no duty and no tax under the postal remission rules. Almost no IEM lands under that line, and the CAD 20 exemption cannot be combined with the CAD 60 gift exemption.
Shipped by courier from the US or Mexico? CUSMA raises the de minimis: up to CAD 40 is duty- and tax-free, CAD 40.01–150 is duty-free but taxable, and above CAD 150 both apply. Parcels from China do not qualify.
See the worked examplesThe three thresholds that decide your bill
| Situation | Threshold | What you pay above it |
|---|---|---|
| Mail or post (most Chi-Fi orders from China) | CAD 20 or less is free of duty and tax | Duty, GST or HST and any PST on the full value, not just the amount above CAD 20 |
| Gift from a friend or relative abroad | CAD 60 or less is free of duty and tax | Tax and any duty on the value above CAD 60. Gifts sent by a business do not qualify |
| Courier from the US or Mexico (CUSMA) | Up to CAD 40 duty- and tax-free; CAD 40.01–150 duty-free but taxable | Above CAD 150, duties and taxes both apply |
Items that do not qualify for the CAD 20 postal exemption include tobacco, books, periodicals, magazines, alcohol, and goods ordered through a Canadian post office box or a Canadian intermediary.
Tax rates by province
The tax is collected on the value in Canadian funds. Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon pay 5% GST. Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island pay 13% HST. British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan are also in CBSA's provincial sales tax collection group, at rates that vary by province.
The fee nobody prices in
Canada Post applies a handling fee of CAD 9.95 per dutiable or taxable mail item. On a USD 23 in-ear monitor the fee is several times the GST charged on the same parcel. It is fixed per item, not proportional to value, so it punishes small single-item orders and is diluted by bundling several items into one shipment.
Worked examples, at prices checked September 16, 2026
| Model (Linsoul list, USD) | Value in CAD | GST 5% | Handling | Landed, Alberta | Landed, Ontario (13% HST) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TANGZU Wan’er S.G — 19.00 | 26.50 | 1.32 | 9.95 | 37.77 | 39.89 |
| Moondrop Chu II — 22.99 | 32.06 | 1.60 | 9.95 | 43.61 | 46.18 |
| 7Hz x Crinacle Zero:2 — 24.99 | 34.85 | 1.74 | 9.95 | 46.54 | 49.33 |

Converted at the Bank of Canada noon rate of 1.3947 for September 16, 2026; your card's rate on the day will differ. All Linsoul figures are USD list prices — the storefront shows Canadian visitors a converted CAD price, which is not the amount charged. Re-check the USD price before ordering.
Read the Wan’er S.G line closely: value plus GST comes to CAD 27.82, but the handling fee takes the total to CAD 37.77. The same three items — Wan’er S.G, Chu II and Zero:2 — in one order came to USD 66.98 (CAD 93.42) and landed at CAD 108.04 in Alberta, or CAD 36.01 per IEM, because the fee is paid once instead of three times.
If duty were not zero, the arithmetic changes fast: a hypothetical 6% duty on the Chu II would add CAD 1.92, and GST is then charged on value plus duty (CAD 1.70), pushing that parcel from CAD 43.61 to CAD 45.63. The reason that is not your bill today is the “Free” MFN rate on tariff item 8518.30.90.
Practical rules for Canadian audio buyers
- Do the maths per parcel, not per item. A CAD 30 order and a CAD 300 order carry the same CAD 9.95 fee.
- Compare domestic before importing. The same models are often listed on Amazon.ca by Linsoul's own Canadian storefront, with no border event at all — see our Amazon.ca versus Linsoul price comparison.
- Never ask a seller to under-declare. It is customs fraud, and it voids your position if the parcel is lost.
- Keep the invoice. If tax is assessed on a returned or misdescribed item, you can dispute it with documents.
- Ask whether the seller prepays tax. A DDP shipment has the tax in the checkout price and no Canada Post fee; whether any given retailer does this for Canada is something to confirm before ordering.
- Check the tariff item for larger gear. This page verifies the rate for earphones and headphones only. Desktop DACs, headphone amplifiers and speakers can fall under different items.

Domestic example: Truthear x Crinacle Zero:RED
CAD 93.00 on Amazon.ca, in stock, sold by LEAUDIO — no GST/HST at the border and no handling fee.

Imported example: SIMGOT EW200
USD 45.00 on Linsoul, landing around CAD 75.85 in Alberta at the checked rate — against CAD 59.99 on Amazon.ca.
Read product notesHigher-value gear changes the picture: a desktop DAC at CAD 108.99 sold domestically (SMSL SU-1) can be cheaper than a similar imported unit once tax and the fee are added. For the full price list, see best budget IEMs in Canada with live prices.
What we could not verify
- Whether a given retailer collects GST/HST at checkout for Canadian orders, or whether it is always assessed at the border.
- Courier brokerage charges when a parcel is cleared by UPS, DHL or FedEx rather than Canada Post. These are charged on top of tax and duty, vary by shipment, and are not published per item.
- Province-by-province PST percentages. We verified that CBSA collects PST in British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan, not each current rate.
- The exchange rate CBSA applies on the day of assessment.
- Tariff classification for DACs, amplifiers, speakers or cables.
Rules cited here were current on September 16, 2026 and can change. Confirm with CBSA or the carrier before relying on any figure for a large order.
