Desktop DACs Under CAD 200 in Canada: Priced Shortlist

Two different products share this price bracket — a line-level DAC and a DAC with a headphone output. Buying the wrong one is the mistake this page exists to prevent.

The short answer

A line-level DAC feeds powered speakers or an amplifier over RCA and has no headphone jack. A DAC/amp adds a headphone output and sometimes a microphone input, so it drives headphones directly. Under CAD 200 in Canada today, the Fosi K5 Pro is the one with a mic input (USB mode only), the S.M.S.L SU-1 is the line-level option, and the TOPPING D10s bridges to an older amplifier. The Topping DX1, which older lists still recommend, shows "Currently unavailable" with no price.

Two entries outside the table matter as much as the four inside it. The FiiO K11 sits just over the line at CAD 211.77 — if CAD 200 is a target rather than a ceiling, that is the next step up. And the Topping DX1 has no price at all today, which is why it is not recommended here even though it appears in older lists, including our own catalogue.

One reading note: the SU-1's price block did not render on our first attempt of the day and returned CAD 108.99 with the seller LEAUDIO on retry. That is a render race on the listing, not a price change, and it is the reason every figure here is dated.

2. Line-out versus mic input: what actually changes

The Fosi K5 Pro is the only model here with a microphone input, and even then it is conditional. Fosi's own documentation lists the inputs as USB-C, optical, coaxial and 3.5 mm mic, and states plainly that in optical and coaxial input modes the K5 Pro does not support the microphone — the mic works over USB only. If a headset with an inline mic is the reason for the purchase, that one sentence decides the connection; the rest of the specification is secondary. The same documentation gives 24-bit/96 kHz over USB, up to 24-bit/192 kHz over optical or coaxial, a headphone output rated for 16–300 Ω, simultaneous headphone and RCA output, DC 5 V power over USB-C, and output ratings from 1000 mW at 16 Ω down to 80 mW at 300 Ω.

The S.M.S.L SU-1 is the other kind of box. The retail listing describes a decoder with RCA analogue output using an AKM AK4493S converter and an XU316 USB interface with MQA and MQA-CD support. It has no headphone jack and no microphone input: it is the right purchase for powered monitors or an amplifier, and the wrong one if the headphones plug into the box. We could not load SMSL's own specification page on the check date, so those converter details are quoted from the seller's listing rather than verified against the manufacturer.

The TOPPING D10s sits between the two: a USB converter with RCA and digital outputs, useful for feeding an older amplifier or a set of powered speakers. It is not a headphone amplifier either.

3. What this tier will and will not do

A desktop DAC under CAD 200 in Canada buys a clean digital-to-analogue stage, a USB input, and — on the K5 Pro — a headphone output and a mic input. It does not buy balanced outputs, it does not buy the current to drive difficult headphones, and it does not buy wireless. If the source is a phone or a laptop and the headphones are easy to drive, a CAD 21.99–106.05 USB dongle does the same job for less; that comparison is in the dongle guide, and the connection paths are explained in Desktop DAC or headphone amp?.

  1. Where does the signal end up? Powered speakers or an amplifier → line-level DAC (SU-1, D10s). Headphones plugged into the box → DAC/amp (K5 Pro).
  2. Do you need a microphone? Only the K5 Pro has a mic input, and only over USB.
  3. What are your other sources? Optical and coaxial inputs matter if a TV or console is involved; USB alone does not.
  4. Then check the price and the stock. All three were in stock under CAD 140 on the check date.

4. Three checks before you plug anything in

Where does the volume live? A line-level DAC outputs a fixed-level signal, so the amplifier or powered speakers downstream own the volume control. If nothing downstream has one, you need a DAC/amp instead.

What powers the box? The K5 Pro runs from DC 5 V over USB-C, so a computer port or a phone charger can feed it. Convenient — and it also means a weak USB port can cause dropouts that look like a fault in the DAC.

Which cable ends do you actually have? Line level into powered monitors usually means RCA, while an amplifier may want RCA or 3.5 mm. Check the ends before ordering, because a missing CAD 10 cable turns a CAD 99 box into a second order.

5. What we could not verify

  • SMSL's own specification page for the SU-1 — it did not load on September 17, 2026, so the converter and interface details are quoted from the retail listing.
  • Whether the Topping DX1 returns to stock, and at what price.
  • Fosi's measured output beyond the published ratings, which we quote as the manufacturer's own numbers.
  • Whether a microphone connected through the K5 Pro's 3.5 mm splitter suits any particular headset; we verified the input exists and its USB-only condition, nothing more.
  • Anything about how any of these sound. No measurements, no listening notes, no preference ranking.
